HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS
HIS
Sometimes called Medical Information System (MIS) or Patient Care Systems (PCS).
Purpose is to manage information needed to facilitate daily hospital operations by all health personnel.
Provides support of both administrative and clinical function.
Usually a large package of program often purchased from a single vendor.
HIS Configurations
Mainframe.
Local area network (LAN).
Many HIS configurations consist of multiple separate systems.
Include dedicated IS for special purpose such as nurse staffing, pharmacy, or laboratory systems.
Program Modules Available in an HIS

Patient tracking
Finance
Payroll
Billing

Inventory
Management reporting

VS records
Point-Of-Service Systems
Uses handheld or bedside PC
Ensure that data are entered @ the point where they are collected
POS are installed in ICU
Problems before POS:
Costly to record twice
There are certain amount of error whenever data are transcribed from one place to another
Greater chance that scrap sheet will be lost/misplaced
If the scrap sheet is lost, there is a potential for compromised patient confidentiality
There is a delay between the time data are collected and the time those data are show up on the chart
The remote work station approach virtually guarantees idle nursing time because only one person can use the workstation at a time, and there is always competition for access to the workstations.
Laboratory, Pharmacy and Radiology Module
Typical Laboratory system
Request
Generates specimen labels
Tracks the specimen
Generates result
Communicate the findings to the patient’s chart
Pharmacy System
Tracks medication orders
Have drug interaction warning programs
Dosage calculators
Contains computer data base (Physician Drug Reference)
Radiology System
Usually diagnostic computer imaging system
Linked with HIS (where images and radiologic report can be viewed at the bedside or unit work station)
